"Clark's Unwelcome Visit," "A Plot to Kill McNeal," and "Disagreeable Meal" reveal intercultural difficulties. "Clark's Dismal Nitch" and "Difficult Road" address situations that tested the mettle of the participants, "Sacagawea and the Whale" and "Hospitality of Chief Yellepit" reveal traits of character as shown in the midst of unusual circumstances. "Dispute between Chiefs " reveals Lewis and Clark's perceptions of character of these Nez Perce leaders.
In some instances, one of the journal keepers will report an incident in detail, where another will give it only brief mention. Read the selected stories, noting their authors, and draw your own conclusions about the character of these historic figures.
