he following excerpts were taken directly from the journals of Lewis and Clark. They demonstrate the diversity in experiences that the Corps shared with the Indians regarding property. Their words help us to see where modern stereotypes may have originated and how common misconceptions may be flawed.
Excerpts are organized according to the three geographic areas through which the Corps traveled along the Columbia, and the native people they encountered there. Each homeland differs in the resources it has to offer, thus each tribe differs in the food they eat, the goods they had to trade, and the commodities that are most valued.
