In Their Own Words: Property and Generosity
VALUED TRADE GOODS

These journal entries give us a glimpse of some things that were most valued by the native people that Lewis and Clark met. Are these the same things that were valued by the Corps? Why or why not? What factors allow objects to possess value? Which things are valued as necessities for survival? Which for the pleasure that they bring to the owner?

You will also find here excerpts describing the trade partners of the Indian people, both native and white. How did each group rely on each other? How did Lewis and Clark fit into this preexisting tribal economy?
