Timeline of the Potlatch Conflict

In 1849, the Hudson's Bay Company established a trading post at Fort Rupert, bringing increased wealth and large quanities of inexpensive trade goods. Meanwhile, disease decimated the Indian population. Nobility lines and rights became unclear and were claimed through potlatching by those who would not be able to do so otherwise. These factors made for more extravagant potlatches, eventually drawing the attention of Canadian governmental officials.
