The West created the
Dayton Peace Accords to resolve the conflict and as a response
to the tragedies of Srebrenica. The Accords are a set of
appendices attached to a general framework of common goals for
Serbians, Bosnians, and other groups in the Balkans to resolve
their conflicts. In the appendices, the West drew up a
compromise for Yugoslavia to be split into different
nations/provinces, to separate the different ethnicities, and
prevent future political conflict. The accords provided for an
immediate cease-fire, troop withdrawal timetables, reparations
for those hurt or affected by the conflict, and an international
tribunal for those who committed crimes against humanity. The
accords were signed on November 20, 1995.
The Accords provided a short-term compromise rather than
a permanent solution, as demonstrated in the late 1990s. |
