Conflicts started in 1987 when Slobodan Milošević, leader of the Serbia Communist Party, revived the idea of a “Greater Serbia”, which would increase the size of the Serbian republic by annexing parts of other republics.

In 1989, Serbia revoked Kosovo’s autonomy and sent troops into the province to squash protests by mostly Muslim Albanians. Also, Milošević became president of Serbia in 1989 as well, which caused many of the republics of Yugoslavia to elect non-Communist governments and demand more autonomy from the dominant Serbian government. Serbia denied their requests and the republics of Slovenia and Croatia declared their independence in June 1991.
