From WWI on, Yugoslavia has been influenced by outside
factors that divided the people. After the death of Tito, they
found themselves in a situation where the economy was failing,
ideas of nationalism and separatism bloomed, and the West and
East fought to maintain a political influence over the Balkans.
These factors contributed to a conflict which the world
neglected until genocide occurred. |

After a series of unsuccessful attempts, the Dayton
Peace Accords were successful in bringing peace to the region.
The compromise is not perfect, and needs adjustment, as shown by
the recent activity in Kosovo. The Peace Accords were the most
important compromises during the Balkan Conflicts, and helped
end major fighting, allowing millions of refugees to return home
and be protected by international forces. |
