ooking Glass, War Chief of the Nez Perce, returning from a three-year buffalo hunt, arrived late to the Walla Walla Council, nearly derailing the negotiations up to that point. He demanded territory already ceded by Chief Lawyer, and that, along with the rage in his voice, caused a deep division in the ranks of the Nez Perce, and provided a rallying point for other dissenting tribes. Ultimately, Looking Glass, along with all the other chiefs, signed the treaty.
